SueAnn Walentuk

I can't help but share this image of me Plein Aire painting on Monhegan Island.  Here I am taking a break on the rocks at Lobster Cove. In the background is Jamie Wyeth's home.  I was lucky to see him one day at the local store on the island.

Being an artist affords me the time to reflect and engage with my surroundings - getting lost in the details and moments that otherwise pass by quickly.  I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master's degrees at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts.   I have been fortunate that my passion for art-making has also been my career for over 30 years as an art educator; working in schools around the world. One of my greatest joys has been to share my passion with young art scholars.  And there is time for me to focus on my painting when I travel to places near and far, paintbox and easel in tow, searching for inspiration.  Those sojourns have taken me to over 40 countries around the world.  I am one lucky artist!

Inspiration

Color... More than any other element, color has a direct and immediate effect on us, on the emotional, intellectual, and psychological level. I'm drawn to the interplay of color, form and light found in nature. My work is an attempt to manipulate these three elements to create exaggerations and impressions of natural forms I have directly observed.

Artists that inspire me include Hans Hoffmann, Georgia O'Keeffe, Edward Hopper, VanGogh, and the still life painters from the 15th century.

Techniques

As a painter, I work with oils on canvas and panels using brushes and palette knife.  When traveling, I especially enjoy painting en plein air, on-site in the environment!  This way of working is exhilarating!

I also make lino-prints, and enjoy this printmaking process, particularly challenging the more colors I create within a print!

career highlights

As an art educator working in international schools in Switzerland and Indonesia, my career has been dedicated to nurturing some of the brightest and most creative young people from around the globe for over thirty years.  My former students are now  fashion designers, graphic designers and successful artists working at Pixar Studios, and Google, as well as independent artists and illustrators in Scotland, England, Australia, Switzerland, France and Italy to name only a few.

For me, I am newly retired from my teaching career and proud to have my paintings on exhibition at the International 2022 Palm Beach Show, in Florida.

My work has been exhibited at the Boston Architectural Center, Cacace Fine Art in Delray Beach, FL, the Anthony Newely Gallery in Boca Raton, FL, and the Palm Beach Art and Design Showroom in Lake Worth FL.

Publications include the Still Point Arts Quarterly, Summer 2022 and The Boston Globe.

My artwork is included in private collections in South Florida, New England, Switzerland, and Bali Indonesia. Contact me!  I'm happy to work with you.
